Storm Water Drainage System Beira – Adaptation to climate change
The overall objective of the Project is to improve the natural drainage system and increase resilience against the negative impacts of climate change. To achieve this, the River Chiveve was reopened, and the drainage system was reinstalled and near-naturally rehabilitated. The hydraulic performance was enhanced by providing a large retention volume. Regulation is ensured by a tidal structure that responds to storm surges and heavy rainfall, safeguarding the city center and informal settlements from inundations. Additionally, natural wetlands were reestablished, mangroves were planted for natural flood protection, and to promote biodiversity.
