Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress
On the International Women’s Day, the global community reflects on the significant steps made towards gender equality (SDG 5) while acknowledging the challenges that women are unfortunately still confronted until today. International Women’s Day 2024 is a call for action to empower girls and women to advocate for their rights. It’s a day to honor the remarkable contributions of women to societies, economies, and cultures, and to reaffirm the commitment to creating a world where gender equality is a reality and not just a phrase. As we stand up to celebrate the accomplishments of women and amplify their voices, we also recognize the urgent need for collective action to address and dismantle the systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress, individual freedom and their chances for a self-determined future.
Empowering women is not just a moral obligation; it is also a crucial element for attaining sustainable development and cultivating inclusive communities. There are several crucial areas requiring collective efforts to achieve gender equality:
Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Standing up for gender equality is not just a moral obligation. It is fundamental for fostering inclusive societies, and as correctly stated in SDG 5 it is “…a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.” Advancement for girls and women yield benefits for entire communities and our society as a whole and significantly contribute to eradicating poverty.

Unfortunately, “More women than men are living in poverty overall. Currently, more than 10 per cent of women globally are trapped in a cycle of extreme poverty, living on less than USD 2.15 a day. At the current rate of progress, as many as 342 million women (8 per cent) will still be living in extreme poverty by 2030” (UN Women). Evidence shows that women cover the most unpaid care and domestic work, spending upto 2.8h more than men on unpaid care. Consequently, women and girls have less time and opportunities to access education and paid work, or to participate in social and political life (UN Women). In order to overcome these inequality it is on the entire global society to Transitioning our economic and social framework to a more gender balanced conscious economy prioritizing and values care work, amplifying women’s fair and equal participation and access to political, economic and social opportunities.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day in 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and women’s rights. Let us amplify the voices of women, support their aspirations, and advocate for policies that promote their well-being and empowerment. Together, we can break down barriers, build a more just society, and create a future where every woman and girl can thrive.
